Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How did you get to be The Veggie Queen??

A. I was given the title at the introduction to a cooking class that I was teaching at Ramekins cooking school in Sonoma. I liked it, so I kept it and decided that it was easier to use, remember and spell than The Vegetarian Connection which is the umbrella organization for my business.

Q. What makes you qualified to counsel people about vegetables, vegetarian and vegan eating?

A. I have been a vegetarian for more than 20 years. I practice what I preach, although I don't preach, just encourage and nudge, eating many seasonal vegetables every day. I started teaching vegan cooking 20+ years ago before I could call it that. I still don't do that because it scares some people. I know that people want food that tastes great, many don't really care that much if it's healthy but it's got to be delicious.

Q.What is the McDougall plan?

A.The McDougall diet (www.drmcdougall.com) is a vegan eating plan that uses no added oils. I taught the program for 3 years and then took a break. I am now teaching for the program occasionally and consider myself an expert at creating great tasting food without the use of added oil when that's what people want. I still encourage eating lots of vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fruit and the occasional addition of nuts, seeds, avocado and olives.
