News Update July 2007

Jill's cookbook, The Veggie Queen: Vegetables Get the Royal Treatment, is now in its second printing.

Jill has been selected as a fellow in the latest Leadership Training for a Sustainable Future class in Sonoma County, presented by the Leadership Institute for Ecology and the Economy. Over a 10-month period Jill will join a select group of county residents who are also concerned about the future in which they share the land. Jill hopes to learn more ways to help connect people with their local food supply, and share her enthusiasm for supporting local farmers and the "eating local" concept.

For a great part of 2006 Jill worked with a small team at Kaiser Permanente in Santa Rosa to revamp the menu and purchasing decisions at the campus cafeteria. Manager Mun Chong worked with Jill, Brad Larsen, Rorie Walden and Barbara Weir to make major menu revisions. The cafeteria changed from a "burger and fries" kind of place to one where the salad bar serves locally grown, organic vegetables in-season, and a vegan hot meal special is offered 3 days a week. The project was one of the most challenging and fulfilling projects that Jill has consulted on. Read more about Kaiser Santa Rosa's new cafeteria menu.

Late in 2006, the Amy's Kitchen Diet Plan was posted on their website. Jill was the consulting dietitian in charge of putting together the plan. As you know, Jill much prefers fresh food to processed every day of the week. She worked on this project as a way to help people who eat frozen meals get more balance in their diets. Her meal plan has helped people lose weight, and without their realizing it, they are including more than 5 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables daily if they follow her suggestions. Jill is currently working on vegan and gluten-free versions of the plan.

Read one of the latest reviews of The Veggie Queen: Vegetables Get the Royal Treatment on fellow dietitian Annie B. Kay's blog. Annie and Jill are on the same wavelength. While you are there, check out Annie's book Every Bite is Divine. If you've got both of these books you will be well on your way to healthier, happier and more fulfilling life.

The Cancer R.D., Diana Dyer, reviewed Jill's book in her summer 2006 newsletter, and this is what she said: "What to do with all those vegetables you see at the Farmers' Market? Here is the book to show you how to serve them up in flavorful ways that you and your family will love. It won't be difficult to increase your veggies to 5 or more servings per day with recipes from this book."
